Carlsbad Caverns, NM

Carlsbad Caverns, NM

Ever wandered through a cathedral built by Earth itself... a hundred stories underground?

That's exactly what it felt like stepping into Carlsbad Caverns in southern New Mexico.  This isn't just a cave, it's a hidden world carved out over millions of years, and it's massive. Imagine descending 750 feet by elevator, or hiking down a paved path for 1.25 miles, into darkness and stepping into the Big Room:  a chamber so huge it could fit 14 football fields.

Your eyes adjust, and then: WOW.

The ceilings tower 250 feet above you, dripping with stalactites like stone icicles.  The ground rises up with stalagmites and glowing flowstones that look like frozen waterfalls. Some formations twist like melted candles, others look like creatures from another planet, it's straight-up alien.

In the deepest parts, it's eerily quiet and otherworldly. The only sounds are water drops echoing through chambers with names like The Hall of the White Giant, Kings Palace, Queens Chamber, Bottomless Pit, and The Green Lake Room. Every corner feels like a portal to another realm.

Pro tips: :

  • From May to October, stick around till sunset for one of the most magical shows on Earth : the bat flight.  Thousands of bats swirl out of the cave in a breathtaking tornado, silhouetted against the desert sky. It's eerie, beautiful, and absolutely unforgettable.
  • The caverns do not allow tripods so be prepared to shoot in the dark handheld.

A must to do on your bucket list.  See you on the next adventure!
